Periodontology

Periodontal diseases are bacterial (microbial) infections that affect and destroy the tissues that surround and support the teeth (the periodontium). The tissues involved are the gum, the attachment fibers (ligament or desmodontium) and the bone that supports the teeth.

Periodontal diseases represent, along with dental caries, the main infections of the oral cavity.

The periodontium is composed of the gum, alveolar bone, cementum and ligament. All of these tissues can be affected by periodontal diseases that can be completely cured if treated early by an oral surgeon specializing in periodontology. The earlier periodontitis is treated, the better the results and the longer you can keep your teeth.

Periodontology also includes mucogingival surgery, which aims to correct gum problems such as recessions, withdrawals or loosening using gum grafting, frenectomy and gingivectomy methods.
